"Final Fantasy Tactics: The Altar of Aisen"

Welcome to my RP. I hope you enjoy the stay, and I also hope it's not too generic and badly formatted...

Any questions you have, please ask them. This is my first RP run on this site and I want it to go right.

"In Latin America, they say that the spirit world is a dark place, empty but for all of the human nightmares and regrets they left behind; the journey through it is long and hard. Every time you write, or draw, or create something new, you light a beacon fire in the spirit world to guide and protect the dead on their journey to the afterlife. Think about that the next time you write, and know that no matter how little it is, you have helped them on their way."

Pleased to see the interest! I'll get on my character so you have an example, even if it's just a Judge.

I'm working on making the signup sheet better, since the way it is now for skills is confusing. >_>

[edit] There, that's a little better. I posted the Judge, too.

just so my Zodiac doesn't get taken, I'll be handling Virgo. I was going to go with my own (Gemini), but it didn't want her to come across as the harbinger of death or something like that

Though in declining sanity this character isn't as confrontational as Koru is... so I doubt he'll cause to much conflict when not overcome by his... voices. Though I always let things flow so I'm not sure what will happen.

It's very interesting to see an FF:T roleplay! It almost made me crack out my SP and play Tactics advaance. Good times. Good times.

Might add a character, but if it fills up, don't hold a spot for me. It's been a while, and I'm rusty on lore.

Caution mutes US response to N. Korea

The Obama administration's cautious response to the death of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il reflects unease and uncertainty about the leadership transition in the reclusive country that has confounded U.S. presidents for 60 years.

  1. The death of Kim Jong Il

    1. Report: Red skies, stormy seas marked Kim's death
    2. Circumstances of Kim Jong Il's death fabricated?
    3. Politics trump hunger in N.Korea
    4. Slideshow: The life of Kim Jong ll
    5. Source: Military coup in N. Korea 'unlikely'
    6. NYT: In Kim's death, an extensive intelligence failure
    7. Cartoons: The life and death of Kim Jong Il
    8. Analysis: Opportunities, dangers loom over N. Korea
    9. Even in death, details of Kim Jong Il's life elusive
    10. Kim Jong Il remembered as 'Team America' star

North Korea, the "hermit kingdom," has vexed the United States and its allies with war, nuclear tests, missile launches, belligerence and bellicose bombast. But since he took office in 2009, President Barack Obama has had to deal with North Korea at perhaps its most secretive point: an unclear succession amid a time of deep concern about the stability of the regime.

Thus, the administration's carefully worded public messages have underscored its desire for better relations with the autocratic nation and its concern about the welfare of the North Korean people. They are also gentle reminders that Washington expects Pyongyang to follow through on denuclearization pledges and improve ties with its neighbors, particularly South Korea.

The kid-gloves treatment accorded to the North's youthful new leader, Kim's twenty-something son Kim Jong Un, has attracted criticism from some who see this is a moment to make a forceful case for dramatic reform and regime change.

But without solid intelligence on the opaque transition process and fearful of misunderstandings that could lead to provocations with the notoriously erratic North, U.S. officials have concluded the best course is to say little, wait and watch.

Indeed, the administration's initial reactions to Kim's death have contained little substance at all.

"All I can say is that we're monitoring the situation closely," White House press secretary Jay Carney said Wednesday as North Korean state media broadcast pictures of wailing mourners, apparently overcome with grief. "Kim Jong Il had designated Kim Jong Un as his official successor, and at this time we have no indication that that has changed."

Carney added: "We hope that the new North Korean leadership will take the steps necessary to support peace, prosperity and a better future for the North Korean people, including through acting on its commitments to denuclearization."

Those comments echoed words from Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. On Monday, more than 16 hours after Kim's death was announced, she was the first senior U.S. official to comment publicly, calling for "a peaceful and stable transition in North Korea" and expressing hope that it would not affect "regional peace and stability."

Ironically, it was Clinton who first stirred the pot about a possible succession crisis in North Korea.

Nearly three years ago, on her first trip to Asia as secretary of state, she stunned diplomatic circles with a frank appraisal of U.S. concerns amid speculation about the health of Kim Jong Il, who had suffered a stroke in 2008, and his choice of a successor.

"If there is a succession, even if it's a peaceful succession, that creates more uncertainty and it also may encourage behaviors that are even more provocative as a way to consolidate power within the society," Clinton told reporters on Feb. 20, 2009.

Her remarks on a previously taboo subject sparked great debate. In Seoul the next day, she expressed surprise at the uproar, noting that reports of Kim choosing his youngest son Kim Jung Un to succeed him had "been in the news for months."

"I don't think that it's a forbidden subject to talk about succession in the hermit kingdom," Clinton said. "In fact, it seems to me it's got to be factored into any policy review that one is undertaking."

That same month, U.S. diplomats were scrambling to collect any information they could about Kim Jong Un from South Korean, Chinese and Japanese officials and experts, according to leaked State Department cables published by WikiLeaks.

Unfortunately for the Americans, their interlocutors had sharply divided opinions, according to the cables. Some predicted the North Korean regime would collapse politically within two to three years of Kim Jong Il's death. Others foresaw a power struggle between the young and untested Kim Jong Un and rivals in the elite, but differed over who would prevail. Others believed there would be little change.

One apparent area of convergence, however, was that most South Korean experts believed the challenge for the younger Kim would come after his father's death.

Before Kim's passing, the U.S. administration had been expected this week to announce the resumption in food aid to North Korea and a potential bilateral meeting on nuclear disarmament. Although the State Department said there had been brief exchange with North Korean officials in New York on Monday, both initiatives are now in flux pending the end of the North's mourning period.

The administration says it is respecting that mourning period by understanding that North Korean officials will not be available for discussions. Yet it has steadfastly refused to express any sympathy for the death of Kim, whose Stalinist regime is accused of having one of the worst, if not the worst, human rights records in the world.

While showering the late Czech democracy leader Vaclev Havel with effusive eulogies, American officials have refused to even utter the word "condolence" in relation to Kim.

The larger issue of the Manning case (Politico)

After 19 months in military prisons ? much of the time in solitary confinement ? Pfc. Bradley Manning finally emerged over the past week from the netherworld to which he has been confined since his arrest in the largest breach of classified information in U.S. history.

Seven days of hearings at Fort Meade, Md., produced what the prosecution called ?overwhelming? evidence that the low-ranking Army intelligence analyst was the one who sent hundreds of thousands of military reports and diplomatic cables to the transparency website WikiLeaks.

But the hearing also produced equally compelling evidence of the larger issue that is often overlooked in discussions of Manning?s alleged misdeeds: the systematic breakdown in security that enabled a low-ranking enlisted man to abscond with a staggering quantity of classified Pentagon and State Department documents.

Manning?s facing prosecution because ?he?s the one that pushed send and the other guys didn?t,? said John Hutson, a retired rear admiral and former judge advocate general of the Navy.

But, Hutson said, that doesn?t mean Manning is the only one deserving of blame for what happened.

?You can tell by his uniform he?s the juniorest guy in the office. There?s this whole hierarchy of people above him, many, many of whom ? failed in one respect or another. They failed in their responsibilities,? Hutson said.

Despite a series of violent outbursts and other indications he was in serious mental distress, Manning?s security clearance wasn?t suspended until he was arrested in May of last year. Some soldiers had long thought he was a threat to himself and others. At least one believed Manning had lunged for a weapon during a fight with another soldier.

Yet Manning was allowed to spend about six months in a purportedly secure intelligence center in eastern Iraq with routine access to classified information ? the same center where he sometimes sat at his computer or curled up on the floor, unresponsive to other soldiers.

And the fact that a junior soldier was downloading 700,000 reports, most of them classified, didn?t seem to set off any alarms. Nor were there any questions at the time about why an analyst in Iraq needed vast numbers of military reports from Afghanistan, diplomatic cables about Iceland or assessments of detainees at Guantanamo Bay.

Security was so lax that anyone with access to the classified network could burn reams of ?secret? data to a CD and simply walk out the door.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said the episode was in some ways a predictable outcome of the rush after the Sept. 11 attacks to share intelligence across the government and to push intelligence to the front lines in Afghanistan and Iraq.

?Everybody was on the bandwagon of sharing information with everybody,? the Michigan Republican told POLITICO. ?You?re in a very fast-paced combat environment trying to ensure the warfighter up front had all the information available. ? Mistakes were clearly made but in a context where people were trying to share information as quickly as possible, this is what happens. When you get someone who goes off the rails, they can do something like this.?

One former senior military official said it?s a bit odd that Manning is the only person on the hook if the damage caused by WikiLeaks was as severe as some have said.

?When you listen to people across the government, ? you would think this [leak] was causing the world to spin off its axis,? said the official, who asked not to be named. ?If that is true, why don?t we then hold people accountable further up the chain??

While Manning is clearly facing the most serious punishment, others involved have not escaped unscathed.

After Manning?s arrest and as the criminal investigation of his conduct continued, the Army launched a probe into the shortcomings in personnel and security procedures. The probe by Lt. Gen Robert Caslen, concluded earlier this year, led to 15 people being disciplined, according to Army spokesman George Wright.

Cowboys build early lead, then coast to victory

(AP) ? Tony Romo made it look easy, shredding Tampa Bay's secondary at will and helping the Dallas Cowboys get back on track in the NFC East.

"This was an important game," Romo said after throwing for three touchdowns and running for a fourth first-half score Saturday night to lead the first-place Cowboys to a 31-15 rout of the struggling Buccaneers.

"Really the playoffs started for us; that's the way we approached it. Guys came out with great energy and it was a great week of practice. We just had to go forward."

Dallas stopped a two-game losing streak in which it blew fourth-quarter leads to allow a seemingly solid grip on the division lead slip away.

The victory gave the Cowboys (8-6) a half-game lead over New York. Although the Giants hold a tiebreaker advantage after beating Dallas 37-34 last week, the Cowboys can claim the division title and host a playoff game by finishing with wins the next two weeks over Philadelphia at home and the Giants on the road.

"I think it showed our character, our resolve, what we're made of," Dallas linebacker Keith Brooking said. "It was obviously doom and gloom around Valley Ranch for the past couple of weeks ? kind of the world was caving in on us. But we just kept fighting and kept plugging away, and we still control our own destiny."

The Bucs (4-10), meanwhile, lost for the eighth straight time and played a miserable first half that certainly didn't do anything to help coach Raheem Morris make a case for keeping his job.

Romo threw a pair of 8-yard TD passes to Miles Austin and Dez Bryant in the first quarter, then finished a seven-play, 89-yard drive with a 9-yarder to Laurent Robinson to make it 21-0 with just under 5 minutes remaining in the second quarter. Romo increased the lead to 28 points on a quarterback sneak in the closing seconds of the opening half.

"I thought he just had a good feel for what we were doing against what they were doing," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. "I thought he got back quickly and got the ball out of his hands, and when he had to move and make plays, he was able to do that too. He made a lot of big plays and not many bad plays."

Tampa Bay managed just one first down and was outgained 279 yards to 55 in the first two quarters, yet found a way to make it more interesting in the second half.

The Bucs, who had yielded 69 consecutive points dating to the second quarter of the previous week's 41-14 loss at Jacksonville, finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter when rookie Adrian Clayborn sacked Romo from behind, forcing a fumble that linebacker Dekoda Watson returned 4 yards for a TD for a much-needed spark.

Josh Freeman's 13-yard TD pass to Dezmon Briscoe and a two-point conversion throw to Kellen Winslow cut it to 31-15 heading into the final quarter.

The Cowboys have led in the fourth quarter in five of their six losses, however there wouldn't be a late collapse this time. Tampa Bay turned the ball over on downs twice in the last 6 minutes, and Sammy Morris picked up a first down inside the Bucs 10 to give the Cowboys an opportunity to run out the clock.

"Too little, too late," Morris said about Tampa Bay's comeback. "Not enough ... at the beginning. You can't dig holes like that for yourself."

Austin's TD midway through the first quarter was set up by Tampa Bay's NFL-leading 32nd turnover, a fumble by Freeman on the fifth play of the game.

The Tampa Bay quarterback scrambled 25 yards on third-and-5 to march the Bucs near midfield, but the opening possession of the night came to an abrupt halt on the next play when Freeman took off again for a 7-yard gain and was stripped of the ball at the Cowboys 44.

Linebacker Bradie James recovered and it took Romo seven plays to get Dallas in the end zone for the first time. The Cowboys marched 69 yards in 10 plays on their next possession, with Romo finishing the drive by finding a wide-open Bryant in the back of the end zone to make it 14-0.

In three career games against Tampa Bay ? all lopsided victories ? Romo has thrown for 908 yards, 11 touchdowns and no interceptions. He was 23 of 30 for 249 yards and was sacked twice Saturday night.

"I was just finding guys who were open and the guys do the rest," Romo said. "I thought the offense played good as a whole."

Felix Jones, back in the starting lineup after DeMarco Murray broke his right ankle last week in a 37-34 loss to the Giants, broke a 38-yard run on the drive leading to Robinson's TD and finished with 108 yards on 22 carries ? his second straight 100-yard performance had 67 yards rushing on 12 carries at halftime.

Freeman, making his second start since missing a game because of an injured throwing shoulder, was 17 of 27 for 148 yards and no interceptions. He led the Bucs in rushing with 37 yards on four attempts and was sacked three times, once by DeMarcus Ware, who notched his 16th of the season.

Thanks to a large contingent of Cowboys fans, the Bucs played before a sellout crowd at home for just the second time in two seasons. Judging by all the blue and white jerseys scattered throughout the 65,000-seat stadium, at least half the house appeared to be rooting for Dallas.

The Bucs have lost eight straight following a 4-2 start that included wins over NFC South rivals New Orleans and Atlanta. The skid has Morris on the hot seat just a year after the NFL's youngest head coach led his team to a surprising 10-6 finish that heightened expectations coming into this season.

Tampa Bay finishes up with games at Carolina and Atlanta. Freeman said Morris' status is out of his hands, but that he and his teammates intend to give maximum effort the rest of the way.

"If you're not going out and giving everything you have for these last two games, you don't really deserve to be out there," Freeman said. "You've got to take some pride in what you're doing."

Notes: Tampa Bay CB Aqib Talib started after sitting out the previous week because of a sore right hamstring, however he aggravated the injury in the first half and did not return. ... By building an early lead, the Cowboys essentially took leading rusher LeGarrette Blount out of Tampa Bay's lineup. Blount, who rarely plays in passing situations, was limited to 21 yards on nine carries. ... Morris finished with 53 yards rushing on 12 attempts for the Cowboys.

Majel, Google's response to Apple' Siri, is like Star Trek vs Star Wars

Majel Barrett in Star TrekIf you track this story all the way back to the source, you might find the actual factual bits to be less than brick solid, but just like the codename on which this Android-based Apple's?Siri opponent is based, the reality of the situation might be much less important than what COULD be, should the future unfold how this story reads.

What we?re to understand here is that Google?s propensity to select much better codenames than the manufacturers who create phones based on their mobile Operating System (OS) Android?continues here with ?Majel,? a voice controlled assistant made to compete against Apple?s iPhone 4S-based Siri.

Majel is short for?Majel Barrett, both Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry?s wife and the voice of the computer on the starship Enterprise.

Of course the Trekkies amongst you will recognize instantly that the Enterprise D wasn?t the only home for Majel in the Star Trek series, but it?s her representation as the voice-activated assistant of that particular starship that makes this unconfirmed rumor enjoyable enough to cover with less than the average amount of confirmation.
When it comes to Androids and Star Trek, there?s just no resisting, that?s what it comes down to here on the Internet.

Google Android has had?voice?recognition?for some time now.
Your Android device is able to hear what you?re looking for in Search, Navigation, Texting, and basically anywhere else, just so long as a developer is willing to work with Android?s open source code for integration.

There?s even a slightly far-fetched yet interestingly ironic moment of reference for the voice recognition already embedded in Android as Director of Android OS?User Experience Matias Duarte says, comparing Google?s approach to that of Apple:

?The metaphor I like to take is ? if it?s Star Wars, you have these robot personalities like C-3PO who runs around and he tries to do stuff for you, messes up and makes jokes, he?s kind of a comic relief guy.
Our approach is more like Star Trek, right, starship Enterprise; every piece of computing surface, everything is voice-aware. It?s not that there?s a personality, it doesn?t have a name, it?s just ?
Computer.?
And you can talk to it and you can touch it, you can interact with it at the same time as you talk with it. It?s just another way to interface with the computer.
?

The word this week goes like this:
Engineers at?Google X?are hard at work creating?the ?first product? that was foretold by the source for the original word on Google X itself.

What you?ll see in the following clip is the first time Commander Riker from Star Trek: The Next Generation meets the Galaxy-class starship he?ll be working aboard for the bulk of the series, showing off how voice recognition works well before the same thing works on smartphones.

Romney's role: The HRC of 2012? (Politico)

For Mitt Romney this December, it?s beginning to look a lot like Clinton.

Like the great, fallen front-runner of 2008, here is another well-funded, Establishment-blessed, presumptive nominee whose supposedly firm hold on his party?s greatest prize seems to be slip-sliding away.

Romney on new front-runner

There are differences to be sure, most centrally that Romney has yet to face a Barack Obama-like, central foe (though Newt Gingrich is now auditioning convincingly for that role) but instead has fought a series of rear-guard actions against a series of candidates-of-the-moment.

But the similarities, particularly to veterans of Hillaryland circa 2008, are remarkable.

*Like Clinton?s stance on the Iraq War authorization, Romney premised his campaign on an early and crucial decision not to apologize for what some partisans see as a fatal flaw: the health care mandate.

*Like Clinton, Romney has found it almost impossible to play halfway in Iowa, which has emerged as an inevitable test for the front-runner.

*Like Clinton, Romney has abruptly dropped any pretense to be above the fray, punching hard at Gingrich after the former House speaker raced by him in the polls.

*And most striking of all, Romney?s campaign, like Clinton?s ? driven by raw political necessity ? has smashed personal red lines the candidate spent decades erecting, racing to humanize a distant and sometimes awkward politician with tales from his time as a Mormon lay pastor.

Romney has followed the Clinton playbook so closely, her former aides say, you?d think she won her party?s nomination. Both began their pivots away from the classic tactics of a campaign sitting on a lead in the same week of December, four years apart.

?They never planned to go negative in the Hillary campaign because they planned to be winning it,? recalled former New York governor David Paterson, an often-deployed Hillary Clinton surrogate. ?I don?t think that the Romney people ever thought that somebody would get up a head of steam like Gingrich and ? when you go negative you have to plan it. You don?t want to go too negative. What happened with Sen. Clinton, when they went negative, it came across as being more personal and more obvious, and here with Romney, yes, it is similar. ?

In interviews, a half-dozen former Clinton aides said they saw eerie similarities between the trajectory of the late stages of her primary campaign and Romney?s.

?When the (Des Moines register poll) came out showing Romney in third I actually had a shot of PTSD,? said one former Clinton adviser. ?Four years ago, (the) biggest factor was opposition to Bush - and Obama skillfully managed to paint Hillary as timid on Bush ? Now (the) biggest thing is hatred of Obama, and Gingrich ? makes Romney seem timid. Or he seems it himself. So that?s why Romney is in the box of being third in Iowa. And counting on a New Hampshire firewall that is shrinking away.?

?It?s the whole arc of the campaign,? said another Clinton vet, listing a number of similarities - dubbing themselves the front-runner (while publicly claiming they weren?t), topping out with support in the primary, sitting on the lead, playing things cautiously and then, when the lead began to evaporate, moving into overdrive with a ?likability tour? and a hard negative pivot.
