Enbridge oil spill in Wisconsin makes it the 806th since 1999

It has been just over two years since the Enbridge Tar Sands oil pipeline near Marshall, MI erupted sending thousands of gallons of oil into the Kalamazoo River.

Yesterday, it has been reported that another Enbridge oil pipeline in Wisconsin was shut down after an estimated 1,200 barrels of oil were leaked.

Reuters reported, ?The U.S. Transportation Department?s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration is investigating the cause of the Enbridge crude oil pipeline failure in Wisconsin,? spokesman Damon Hill said in an email on Saturday, adding that an inspector had been sent to the location of the pipeline failure.

Reuters also reported, Just weeks ago, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board delivered a scathing report of Enbridge?s handling of the July 2010 rupture of its Line 6B near Marshall, Michigan, which led to more than 20,000 barrels of crude leaking into the Kalamazoo River.

First, this should be another clear indication that Enbridge cannot be trusted with human or environmental well being, since this is just one of over 800 oil spills and leaks from their pipeline system in recent years, according to a report from the Polaris Institute.

Secondly, even if the pipelines were ?safe,? the extraction and burning of oil, particularly the Canadian Tar Sands Oil is devastating to indigenous communities, wildlife, eco-systems and it contributes significantly to global warming, according to the group Tar Sands Watch.

Lastly, the fact that Enbridge is proposing new Tar Sands pipelines to go through Michigan should motivate and mobilize people to prevent that from happening. This was the message of activists who came to Lansing on July 18 to form a human oil spill, drawing attention to the criminal track record of Enbridge.

Child Obesity is now considered a nationwide problem. Recognizing this the ABC School Board approved a resolution at its July 17 meeting creating a collaborative program to address childhood obesity in Hawaiian Gardens. with Tri City Regional Medical Center and the City of Hawaii Gardens

The program called ?Activate Hawaiian Gardens, ?will engage local school-age children, parents, caregivers, teachers, physicians and other community stakeholders in an obesity-reduction initiative.

Vehicle Owners to Receive Relief with Payment of Vehicle Tax.

Philipsburg:--- Minister of Finance Roland Tuitt announced on Wednesday during the Council of Ministers' press briefing that his Ministry has been working on simplifying the payment of the annual number plate taxes. Tuitt said residents and vehicle owners on St. Maarten will soon be able to pay their vehicle taxes via internet banking or at other banking institutions as early as 2013. The Finance Minister said that vehicle owners will receive a bill and they can also choose to pay it at the Receiver's Office. Tuitt further explained that the measure is part of upgrading the tax system of St. Maarten, while providing better services to the community of St. Maarten.

Vehicle owners will no longer have to purchase a new number plate annually neither would they have to purchase the sticker to show that they have paid their vehicle taxes. "The number plates that are on your vehicles will be the only number plate for that vehicle. If someone sells their vehicle, the number plate also goes with that vehicle."

"Paying taxes is not normally embraced, therefore, greater effort should be made to make the experience of taxpayers as painless and efficient as possible. The way the motor vehicle tax is levied and collected is not customer-friendly and certainly does not encourage compliance. Every year, car owners are lining up at the Receiver's Office to pay the tax and to collect their new number plates. This system is highly ineffective, time-consuming, environmental unfriendly, and in dire need of reform."

Government is currently examining the possibility of moving away from the yearly issuing of number plates by levying and collecting the motor vehicle tax electronically starting in January 2013. This initiative is a pre-requisite to modernize the tax system, lowering the administrative burden, and further improving the tax compliance.

Robert Pattinson Moves Out!

The fallout from Kristen Stewart cheating on her boyfriend Roberr Pattinson continues and this time it is he who is making headlines. The hunky actor has reportedly moved out of the home he shared with his cheating girlfriend. According People magazine Rob has taken a bold step in response to KStew?s cheating, he has moved out. The alleged change of address for Pattinson occurred on Thursday a mere day after Stewart admitted that she had hooked up with her Snow White Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders. Her married director as I am sure you are all aware. She is disgusting if you ask me but that is for another article. Up until this recent action Robert has been keeping his silence since the whole cheating scandal broke. Actually he still is keeping mum on the subject because there hasn?t even been a statement released by him but in this case his actions speak volumes. Here is the kicker though the house actually belongs to the British actor, so any move is probably going to be temporary. Seriously he should have kicked her but to the curb after what she did not left his own house. As I [...]

Business Begging for Life

Even in this seemingly permanent recession, government is intensifying its regulation, taxation and harassment of regular business people. Business pages are filling up with pleas to government from real-life entrepreneurs. All these people are saying is give freedom a chance.

An example is Seth Gordon, the co-founder and ?TeaEO? of Honest Tea, which makes fabulous drinks that come in 16.9 ounce bottles. The tea sells very well but runs headlong into the latest absurdity of regulatory control from the New York mayor?s office.

Supposedly waging war on obesity, Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to ban for sale in eating establishments all drinks with more than 25 calories per 8 ounces. Honest Tea, founded to be a healthy alternative to soft drinks, misses this mark by 10 calories per serving.

This means that this low-calorie drink is a direct target of the police power of the state. It?s the new prohibition?against tea! Amazing.

This puts the company in a terrible position. They already had purchased several hundred thousand dollars worth of 16.9 ounce bottles, and it seems crazy to throw that away completely a adopt a smaller size, especially given that the regulation could be arbitrarily changed yet again.

In any case, as I read Gordon?s plea for the life of his company, the obvious occurred to me. Let?s say you reduce the bottle size. Thirsty people might end up buying two, thereby defeating the whole point of the regulation, and creating another supposed problem of trash proliferation. Given prevailing environmental consciousness, don?t large bottles make sense?

Now, to be sure, Godon is not sure what the right size of the bottle ought to be. But he is pretty sure that politicians don?t know the answer to that either. ?As a beverage marketer, we willingly submit to the unforgiving judgment of the market,? he writes in the Wall Street Journal. ?What we did not anticipate was an arbitrary decision to constrain consumer choice.?

There are about a million problems with this approach to controlling obesity. The notion that drinks are the problem is absurd, and, very strangely, the legislation itself seems to exempt milkshakes and liquor. Regardless, the problem of being too fat is as unique to individuals as are the solutions. You can?t force people to be thin, not in a developed economy where leisure is a default, the majority work at desk jobs, and high-calorie food is plentiful.

At the same time we have a nation-wide war against fat, there is another ongoing culture war against too thin as well. Anti-anorexia activists are busy harassing magazines that feature too many thin models, and denounce super-model agencies and beauty pageants for driving girls to absurd lengths to shave off the pounds.

How close are we to have an official nation-wide mandatory pound-per-height ideal that everyone but politicians must adhere to? I tell you, there are people out there who would push the button to make this happen if they could get away with it.

What makes me absolutely nuts is how elected officials today imagine that government should have any power over these matters at all. What does the idea of freedom mean if not the freedom to eat and drink and determine one?s own resulting physique? I would say that same about the pills we take, the plants we smoke, the books we read, and every other aspect of life that is not injurious to others.

A few days before this article on tea appeared, there was another sad article along the same lines, by Henry Juszkiewicz, the CEO of Gibson Guitar. Last year, his office was raided by the G men. The federal agents took 100 guitars, many boxes of raw materials, traumatized workers, and cost the company several millions in profits. They had no clue what was going on.

Why? The reason has to do with some environmental regulation on the use of woods that go into making quality fingerboards. The wood is from India, a regulation that says that the wood must be finished before being imported, whereas Gibson Guitar finishes the wood in the U.S. It further turns out that two different regulatory agencies disagree on precisely how to implement this legislation.

How can any company possibly keep with all the arbitrary laws and arbitrary enforcement? The Gibson company has been fighting hard for its reputation and trying its best to avoid the label of being a bad citizen. But at least it has been fighting!

Juszkiewicz wrote in the Wall Street Journal as follows:

In America alone, there are over 4,000 federal criminal offenses. Under the Lacey Act, for instance, citizens and business owners also need to know?and predict how the U.S. federal government will interpret?the laws of nearly 200 other countries on the globe as well. Many business owners have inadvertently broken obscure and highly technical foreign laws, landing them in prison for things like importing lobster tails in plastic rather than cardboard packaging (the violation of that Honduran law earned one man an eight-year prison sentence).

Plenty of other business face regulatory harassment on a daily basis but never go public with complaints, for fear of being targetted. It is impossible to find any physical product on the shelves that is not subject to thousands of regulatory mandates. There isn?t a service in the above-ground economy that is not similarly regulated.

In some ways, the adaptations that business undertakes ends up discrediting business itself. The new and improved refrigerator, oven, or lawnmower ends up being a degraded project that doesn?t work as well as the old one, but the business fears pointing out it out because it doesn?t want to face the consumer backlash. So they all continue to act as if life is normal.

But life is not normal in the one-time land of the freed. You can investigate this for yourself and observe that reality is exactly the opposite of what President Obama says. Far from making enterprise possible in the first place, the major result of the regulatory state is to establish barriers, introduce restrictions, add an element of fear, and move the rules around in a way that makes enterprise increasingly difficult.

U.S. business today faces a comprehensive and devastating central plan that is systematically driving economic dynamism to a grinding halt. One only needs to compare the innovation that takes place in the relatively less regulated digital world with that imposed upon the physical world that tea makers and guitar manufacturers inhabit.

If there is to be a new tea party, it shouldn?t be dumping tea but dumping the regulators who are trying to restrict our rights to drink it however we want it.

Jeffrey Tucker

?Imitinef Mercilet? is apparently an alternative spelling of the drug Imatinib mesylate which is used in the treatment of some forms of leukemia along with other types of cancer. Imatinib, often referred to a ?Gleevec?, has proved to be an effective treatment for some forms of cancers. However, ?blood cancer? is a generalized term for cancers that affect the blood, lymphatic system or bone marrow. The three types of blood cancer are listed as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. These three malignancies require quite different kinds of treatments. While drugs (including Imatinib), along with other treatments such as radiation can help to slow or even stop the progress of these cancers, there is currently no single drug treatment that can be said to actually cure all such cancers.

(AP) ? It will be remembered as the most anticipated race never run. The runoff that turned into a walk away to conclude the U.S. track trials.

Jeneba Tarmoh conceded the final Olympic spot in the 100 meters rather than meet training partner Allyson Felix at the starting line to break a third-place tie. She notified USA Track and Field early in the day of her intention to withdraw from the Monday night race, later saying it was simply because her heart wasn't into the runoff.

In the original race on June 23, Tarmoh leaned across the finish line and looked up to see her name on the scoreboard in the third spot behind winner Carmelita Jeter and runner-up Tianna Madison. The 22-year-old Tarmoh then took a celebratory lap around the track, waving an American flag. She received a medal and held a news conference.

And then watched the moment evaporate as the race was ruled a dead heat. She was reluctant to take the line for a runoff from the start, especially since she believed she earned the final spot in the 100 fair and square.

"Running in this (runoff) came down to how I felt internally. Would my heart be at peace running or would I not be at peace? If I was at peace, I would have run," Tarmoh told The Associated Press on Monday night. "My heart was not at peace with running."

In an email sent through her agent to USATF, Tarmoh officially conceded: "I understand that with this decision I am no longer running the 100m dash in the Olympic Games and will be an alternate for the event."

The unique race was scheduled to be shown in prime time on NBC in conjunction with the network's coverage of the swimming trials. It would've been a boon for track. Now, it's another blow for a sport that's taken its fair share of late.

"This could've been something exciting for the sport, something new, something different," said Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee, whose husband, Bobby, coaches both sprinters. "It would bring people in that don't ordinarily watch. Reality at its best. This is reality. You've got everything ? emotion, drama.

"But you don't have a cast."

And without a cast, track's moment in the spotlight fizzled.

"It is very frustrating for me, for someone who would like more people watching sport our sport on a regular basis," NBC sprints analyst Ato Boldon said. "That anytime you hear a track and field story, it's going to have a clumsy, awkward, or cringe-worthy ending."

USATF President Stephanie Hightower said the organization was "disappointed" that Tarmoh had a change of heart.

The controversy in the 100 overshadowed the entire trials because USATF had no protocol in place to deal with a dead heat. And after top officials scrambled to draft a tiebreaking procedure on the fly, the athletes didn't want to talk about it until after the conclusion of the 200 ? nearly a week later.

The tiebreak also didn't exactly address this particular situation ? an athlete commits to racing and decides not to at the last minute. The matter, however, was resolved once Tarmoh stepped aside.

"I feel very good about my decision. Most people don't understand why. But I'm not here to explain anything," Tarmoh said. "I'm saying I'm at peace."

Both athletes are represented by Nike, but Tarmoh insisted the shoe company didn't play a role in the decision.

"Nobody got any kind of money," Tarmoh said. "Nike didn't even know, in fact."

Tarmoh said she would not pursue any legal action to get her spot.

"No legal action at all," she said.

Tarmoh also said this hasn't affected her relationship with Felix, who's taken the young sprinter under her wing.

"I've told Allyson numerous times, 'I have the utmost respect for you. I don't want you to think I'm mad at you or anything negative,'" Tarmoh said. "She's an inspiration to me, helping me on and off the track."

There was no guarantee Felix would've run in the race, either. She said Sunday that she would allow her health to make the final decision. If she warmed up and didn't feel right, that's it, Felix was going to pull out of the competition. She wasn't about to risk anything this close to London.

One of the faces of track, Felix will now race in both the 100 and 200 in London. She is the favorite to win her signature event, the 200, after winning silver medals in the last two Olympics.

Although Tarmoh didn't qualify in the 200, she's eligible to run in the Olympic 400-meter relay.

"The situation has been difficult for everyone involved," Felix said in a statement. "I had accepted the USATF decision and was prepared to run at 5 p.m. I wanted to earn my spot on this team and not have it conceded to me so I share in everyone's disappointment that this runoff will not happen. All I can do now is turn my focus to London."

This has been a debacle since Felix and Tarmoh crossed the line in 11.068 seconds. The options USATF presented to settle the tie were a runoff, coin flip or one athlete conceding the spot to the other.

The athletes and their agents met with USATF representatives Sunday, and Felix and Tarmoh chose to settle matters on the track. Tarmoh, however, was clearly unhappy with the choice.

On Sunday, she said felt "like I was kind of robbed."

A day later, she's at peace even if millions of fans were looking forward to the race.

"I didn't even think about that," Tarmoh said. "Honestly, when they said runoff, all I thought about was me and Allyson.

"It's not because she's my training partner. After I ran the 100 and saw my name as third place on the scoreboard, took my victory lap, got a medal, went to the press conference and then they tell me that you don't have third place anymore? It kind of broke my heart a little bit."
