Denon AVR-1613

Even just a few years ago, many home theater receivers required optional iPod docks that were clumsy to set up and featured primitive on-screen user interfaces. The Denon AVR-1613 ($399.99 direct) has baked-in iPod and AirPlay capability, and sits squarely in the mainstream end of Denon's lineup. It's a solid receiver and a good buy as an up-to-date centerpiece to a home theater system, even though it clearly shows signs of its 1990s-era roots.

Design, Inputs, and Features
Measuring 5.9 by 17.1 by 13.0 inches (HWD), the The AVR-1613 weighs just over 18 pounds. A front-panel USB input makes it easy to pop in a thumb drive, or access the stored contents on an iOS device while charging it simultaneously. The power cord is hardwired, which is unfortunate if it fails down the road, but it's not a big issue for a lower-priced receiver. In standby mode, Denon claims the AVR-1613 draws just one tenth of a watt.

There are five HDMI inputs?one more than the Yamaha RX-V473 ($449.99, 3.5 stars)?including a convenient port on the front, which is great for plugging in a smartphone, tablet, or laptop computer. All of the HDMI inputs support video switching, so you won't have to use two remote controls to watch different sources. There are no component or S-video inputs and outputs, though. All you get besides HDMI are two sets of composite inputs and one set of outputs, although at this point that's less of a problem than it would have been, say, two years ago. If you need these connectors, the RX-V473 is a better choice.?

AirPlay support is a recent addition. It lets you stream music over the air wirelessly from an iPhone, iPod, iPad, Apple TV, or even a computer running iTunes. Unfortunately, the AVR-1613 itself does not integrate Wi-Fi. To use AirPlay, you need to connect the receiver to your home network via a wired Ethernet connection. Pandora and Sirius XM streaming, as well as access to Denon's own radio site, which delivers more than 12,000 Internet radio stations, are all onboard.

Denon AVR-1613

The AVR-1613 is also DNLA 1.5 certified, but there's no HD Radio or even AM tuner?your only terrestrial option is FM stereo. I would have liked to see stereo Bluetooth support, especially now that Android handsets dominate smartphone sales by a significant margin. On the plus side, you'll still get better sound quality via the phone's headphone output?using an inexpensive Y-cable available at Radio Shack, as the AVR-1613 lacks a front-mounted stereo mini-jack.

The included remote control is much simpler than the one Yamaha bundles with the RX-V473. Unfortunately, it was rather stubborn in my tests. Sometimes the AVR-1613 just didn't respond to my commands, as if it were stuck thinking about the last thing I asked for.?In addition to the remote, the receiver comes with an Audyssey setup microphone for speaker calibration, a Getting Started guide, and an owner's manual in PDF format on a CD. Denon also, inexplicably, throws in a copy of Nero 9 Essentials.

Setup, Calibration, and Amplification
To get started, you'll need an HDMI cable, a set of passive speakers (either stereo or 5.1), and a TV, which you'll need for setting up the receiver and accessing the iPod interface as well as for watching movies.

On first bootup, the AVR-1613 will walk you through an on-screen setup wizard using the remote control. It asks whether you have a center channel, surround speakers, or a subwoofer. Then it offers to measure the acoustics of your room using the included microphone and a series of sound tests. You plug the setup microphone into the Setup Mic port on the front panel. From there, the system walks you through setting up your input devices (such as a Blu-ray player or Xbox 360), and then prompts you to connect to a wired network.

As a proper home theater receiver, the AVR-1613 includes five discrete channels of amplification, with each outputting 75 watts at 0.08 percent THD. Audiophiles still prefer separate preamps and amplifiers, but Denon receivers have always acquitted themselves well in terms of sound quality.

Fortunately, the Denon AVR-1613 simply sounds great?anyone concerned about the actual output will be more than pleased with this receiver. I tested the AVR-1613 with a set of Energy Take Classic 5.1 ($399, 4 stars) speakers, which includes five two-way satellites and a 200-watt, 8-inch powered subwoofer. Through the satellites, I heard clean, powerful sound at full tilt, with smooth, transparent highs and a clearly defined, three-dimensional image. The Take Classic 5.1 satellites offer 89 dB sensitivity, which isn't the most efficient design out there. But even so, the AVR-1613 had no trouble driving these to ear-splitting volumes.

To test the Denon AVR-1613's home theater prowess, I ran scenes from the the 2010 DTS Demonstration Blu-Ray Disc through the receiver, a Samsung BD-D5500 ($159.99, 3.5 stars) Blu-ray player, a Sony Bravia KDL-46EX620 ($809.99, 3.5 stars), and?the Energy Take Classic 5.1 speakers. Generally speaking, the Denon handled the job with aplomb; it sounded slightly warmer than the Yamaha RX-V473, with less treble emphasis and a slightly more full-bodied lower midrange. Even so, voices, arrow shots, and horse gallops sounded clear and distinct in Robin Hood (the 2010 film with Russell Crowe), and the Take Classic 5.1 had no problem rendering many sound sources simultaneously throughout the image. With the DTS-encoded Despicable Me, the AVR-1613 clearly separtated the rocket ship engines and low rumble while in flight, and put up clear dialog throughout.

iPod Playback and UI Issues
The AVR-1613's digital music chops need work. I plugged my iPhone into the front-mounted USB port and switched the Denon's source to iPod/USB. (Unfortunately, it doesn't work with iPads in this mode.) You can play stored iPod music two ways: In Remote Mode, which lets you control playback directly from the iPod, and Browse Mode, which puts up track and artist info on the screen, and lets you select it using the Denon's remote control. I tested the iPod playback with two devices: the aforementioned iPhone, and a 4th-generation iPod nano. Both worked, although the AVR-1613 was temperamental. Sometimes it played music back fine; other times, it remained stuck at the beginning of the song.

A firmware update became available toward the end of the review period, which promised to take 21 minutes to install. Excited by the prospect of eliminating the bugs, I installed it?only to see that the on-screen menu text, already buggy, pixelated, and slightly wobbly, became downright unreadable on the music playback screen. Everything looked doubled; rebooting the monitor and the receiver didn't help. Worse, iPod playback was buggier than before. Once, it started a song at full blast, threatening to deafen me and blow out the speaker system. It wouldn't respond to the volume dial, and wouldn't even shut off with the power switch; I had to hold it down for five seconds to get the receiver to power down. (Next up would have been pulling the plug.) It didn't do this again, but the intermittent playback issues continued.

AirPlay and Conclusions
On the plus side, AirPlay connectivity worked great. Once I configured the unit over wired Ethernet, I had no problem streaming music from various AirPlay-compatible devices to the AVR-1613. The receiver displays album art on screen whenever available, which is something the Yamaha RX-V473 doesn't do. Pandora playback also worked well; I logged in with my account, started several of my stations, and listened to uninterrupted streaming Internet radio.

I also tested Denon's free iOS remote control app, which works with the AVR-1613 and other networked receivers from the company. It does the job, but it has a very confusing UI?it took plenty of tapping and head-scratching to figure out where everything was. Yamaha's free iOS app is much more thoughtfully designed, although actual functionality differences between the two are less than they appear once you figure out where Denon hid the source select, DSP modes, and other playback and setup controls.

All told, the Denon AVR-1613 makes a solid centerpiece to a proper home theater system in 2012. But thanks to its lack of Wi-Fi and its rudimentary display graphics, there's a bit of a disconnect between 1980s and 1990s-style home theater components, and the complex, fragmented world that is music listening today. So while the AVR-1613 could use more refinement, it's impressively well specified otherwise, and should let you do just about anything you'd want with a home theater setup today.

short sales Afford Opportunity For Smart Buyers ? Real Estate

Article by Charlie Pigeon

Southwest Florida has some of the most sought-after high priced oceanfront real estate in the nation, but many buyers are also finding great deals here. A wide variety of new custom condos and homes in the area are being sold at surprisingly affordable rates, discounting the notion that only the wealthy can afford to live in cities like Fort Myers and Cape Coral.

Find properties at Real Estate Matchmaker

In fact this trend can be spotted in high-end markets throughout the nation, and not because of anything wrong with homes in these areas. In many cases it?s due to a high percentage of ?short sale? properties. A short sale can occur just before a property enters the foreclosure stage when the owner is behind or defaulting on mortgage payments. At this point the bank or lender may decide to re-sell the property at a discount, rather than go through with a time-consuming and expensive foreclosure.

During the most recent national real estate boom, high demand in hot markets like Southwest Florida drove prices way up and left many property owners with mortgages and property taxes they couldn?t afford to pay. The lenders who financed much of this speculation found themselves willing to take a slight loss in the short sale market for a couple reasons: a) with property slightly overvalued due to speculation, any resales would necessarily fetch a lower price; b) foreclosures take much longer to complete than short sales, require a lawyer in most cases, and risk leaving the lender with a much lower price if the property goes to auction.

Also known as a ?pre-forclosure? sales, short sales represent a great opportunity for savvy buyers and investors. Those willing to do the little extra work can often obtain a discount of 20-25 per cent, without waiting for a further decrease in the market. So what extra work does a short sale require? It is a bit of a process, but knowing the steps can save you a lot of time and energy. short sale transactions typically start with the original borrower who?s defaulting on the mortgage. It?s up to the investor to liaise with the borrower and lender, and make sure all financial information is shared. The investor must also work to portray the short sale property as one that?s lost market value, and in need of improvements. A high contract bid for repair work on the property, forwarded to the lender, can be a convincing piece of evidence here. Finally, the lender will ask to see a contract between the investor/buyer, and the seller, to make sure the seller isn?t making any money from the deal ? the ?net cash? paid to the seller in this transaction should be the same amount paid to the lender.

Smart buyers can make a good return for their investment in a cooling but dependable market like Southwest Florida, and short sales are an effective strategy for this.

Scientists set to reveal Hawking's 'brain hack'

Ted S. Warren / AP

To produce the words for text or speech, British physicist Stephen Hawking currently uses an infrared sensor mounted on his eyeglasses, visible here during an appearance this month in Seattle. The sensor picks up twitches from his cheek, which are translated into the desired letters or words. Hawking and neuroscientist Philip Low are experimenting with a system that can translate brain waves directly into text and speech.

By Alan Boyle

After months of tweaking, researchers are finally ready to show off a high-tech headband that can translate Stephen Hawking's brain waves into speech?? providing what could eventually become an easier avenue for the paralyzed British physicist and many others to share their deep thoughts.

The system, developed by San Diego-based NeuroVigil and known as iBrain, uses a head-mounted receiver the size of a matchbox to pick up different types of brain waves. iBrain employs a computer algorithm called SPEARS to analyze the brain emanations and encode them for a text-based speech reader. Philip Low, NeuroVigil's founder, chairman and CEO, is to present the latest results from his work with Hawking on July 7 at a Cambridge conference on consciousness.

"I haven't discussed doing a demonstration with Stephen, but we could do that, of course," Low told me today. During the conference, Low will be showing video clips of Hawking using the iBrain to communicate.

For decades, Hawking has been coping with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a degenerative nerve disease that has left the theoretical physicist confined to a wheelchair and unable to move even his fingers. To write or speak, he currently uses an infrared sensor system mounted on his eyeglasses: His cheek twitches are read by the sensor to control a wheelchair-mounted computer system that slowly encodes the patterns of those twitches. It can take a half-hour for Hawking to twitch out a couple of sentences in response to a question.

In an abstract prepared for next month's presentation, Low and Hawking describe how they worked out their technique for the iBrain system. Hawking (who is described as a "high-functioning 70-year-old ALS patient" in the abstract) was told to try moving one of his hands or feet ? for example, flexing his foot or scrunching his hand into a ball. The limbs didn't move, of course, but just thinking about trying to move them generated readable brain-wave patterns.

"The subject's brain activity demonstrated distinct broad-spectrum pulses extending to the gamma and ultra-high gamma ranges," the researchers wrote. "Such pulses were present in the absence of actual movement, and absent when the subject was not attempting motion."

The abstract said Hawking's brain also buzzed with alpha brain waves when he closed his eyes, as expected.?Alpha waves are associated with wakeful relaxation, and are probably familiar to anyone who's undergone biofeedback training. Gamma waves, in contrast, are associated with increased attention?? and in the past have been linked to?activities ranging from running to learning.

Lots of possibilities
The fact that Hawking's brain signals could be read reliably is a good sign, not only for one of the world's best-known scientists but for hundreds of thousands of others around the world.?Low and Hawking say their work "opens the possibility to link intended movements to a library of words and convert them into speech, thus providing ALS sufferers with communication tools more dependent on the brain than on the body."

Low told me that the brainwave-reading device could be used to control prosthetic devices "to give ALS sufferers mobility"?? sort of like a real-life version of the Stephen Hawking robotic exoskeleton proposed in an Onion parody 15 years ago.

The iBrain device could have other applications, such as diagnosing sleep apnea, studying autism and monitoring other brain conditions. It's already been used in a clinical trial to monitor the effects of experimental drugs on brain activity. The U.S. military is also looking into how the device can help treat traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder, which are big issues for combat veterans. Direct brain-to-speech communication, however, represents the highest-profile application, particularly when Stephen Hawking is involved.

"We'd like to find a way to bypass his body, pretty much hack his brain," The Telegraph quoted Low as saying.

The key question for Hawking is whether iBrain represents an improvement over the system he currently has. Back in April, the professor told The New York Times?that the project hadn't quite reached that point. "At the moment I think my cheek switch is faster ... but should the position change I will try Philip Low's system," he wrote in an email sent by an assistant.

In that quote, Low said Hawking was talking about brain-computer interfaces in general, rather than specifically about iBrain. "What we are seeing is in fact an immediate response, so the question is going to be to productize this, so that he can communicate reliably should he lose control of his cheek muscles," he said.

TEDMED via YouTube

Neuroscientist Philip Low (at right) demonstrates how the iBrain device can send brain-wave readings to a cellphone with an subject who's wearing the headband (at left) during a TEDMED 2009 presentation. Click on the image to watch the YouTube clip.

Personal quest
Low said the iBrain project was already moving on to Version 2.0, and the iBrain 3 device is due to be built next year. "That will be about the size of a U.S. quarter," he told me. "People will be able to check their brain activity much like you or I can check our blood pressure."

The 32-year-old, Vienna-born researcher's company has come a long way since its founding, which Low says he initially financed by putting $240,000 on his credit card. Someday, he hopes brain-monitoring systems will be used to pick up the signs of neurological problems early enough to do something about them. For Low, this is not just business. It's personal.

"I would have loved to see this 20 years ago, when my father suffered from a side effect of a commonly used sleep drug," he told me. "He threatened someone with a weapon ... a gun, actually. And it destroyed our family."

His father was eventually pardoned, but it took a long time to put everything back together. That experience led Low to look into the neurological basis of sleep, including experiments with bird brains. That was what led him to come up with the SPEARS algorithm in the first place.

"It's very ironic that an algorithm I initially developed to analyze the brain patterns of birds has found its way to dealing with Stephen Hawking's brain patterns, the U.S. military and autistic children," he told me.?

(AP) ? Michael Phelps could have a showdown with rival Ryan Lochte on the very first day of the U.S. Olympic swimming trials.

USA Swimming announced Sunday that Phelps passed on the deadline to scratch from the 400-meter individual medley, meaning the winningest Olympian ever will at least swim the preliminary round Monday morning. Should he qualify for the evening final and decide to race it, he likely would be pitted against Lochte and Tyler Clary, who went 1-2 in the event at last year's world championships.

Phelps will swim in the 10th of 12 prelim heats. Clary will go in the 11th, followed by Lochte in the final heat.

"We would like to see what he can do in the event," Phelps' coach, Bob Bowman, said in a text message to The Associated Press. "He's done a few decent ones in season, so we are taking a shot and seeing how it goes."

Phelps won the 400 IM at the last two Olympics, but vowed after Beijing to give up the grueling event that requires all four strokes. He had a change of heart, putting the race back in his program at several Grand Prix meets leading up to Omaha.

Lochte said Saturday he looked forward to facing Phelps in as many events as possible.

"He's the world's best swimmer ever," Lochte said. "I love racing against him. It's fun. He's one of the hardest racers in the world. He'll go toe-to-toe with you until the end. That's excitement for me. I really hope he does swim that."

Obama, Putin call for halt to Syria onslaught

US President Barack Obama and Russia's President Vladimir Putin called Monday for an "immediate" end to the Syria conflict as 94 deaths were reported in a worsening artillery pounding of cities.

The call by the rival powers was made as Russia reportedly prepared to send two warships with marines to its naval base in Syria where UN monitors have suspended their patrols because of escalating violence.

"In order to stop the bloodshed in Syria, we call for an immediate cessation of all violence," the two leaders said in a statement after meeting on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Los Cabos, Mexico.

"We are united in the belief that the Syrian people should have the opportunity to independently and democratically choose their own future," the leaders said.

Putin told reporters that he and Obama had found "many common points" on the 15-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

Obama said he and Putin agreed on the need for a "political process" to halt the conflict and had pledged to work with UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan on the crisis.

But there was little sign they had agreed a way to end the conflict which monitors say has now cost more than 14,400 lives.

The United States has voiced frustration at Russia's blocking of UN Security Council moves against Assad. The head of the UN mission in Syria is to brief the Security Council on Tuesday on the deteriorating conflict.

The United States, Britain and France are working on a new UN Council resolution in which they want to threaten sanctions against Assad. But Russia, Syria's main international ally, and China have already blocked two resolutions which just hinted at measures.

A British marine insurer, meanwhile, said it had cancelled cover for a Russian ship, the MV Alaed, following reports it was carrying Mi-25 helicopter gunships destined for Syria.

"We have already informed the ship owner that their insurance cover ceased automatically in view of the nature of the voyage," Standard Club said.

The Daily Telegraph reported that the ship was stopped off the coast of Scotland.

Moscow news reports, meanwhile, said Russia is preparing to send two amphibious assault ships and marines to the Syrian port of Tartus where Russia has a naval base to ensure the safety of its nationals.

The amphibious warships, The Nikolai Filchenkov and The Tsezar Kunikov, are to be sent to Tartus with a "large" group of marines, Interfax news agency quoted an officer at Russian naval headquarters as saying.

There was no official confirmation of the report by Russian authorities, however.

The Tsezar Kunikov can carry 150 troops and armaments including tanks, while The Nikolai Filchenkov can carry up to 1,500 tonnes of cargo and equipment, the report said.

Interfax said the ships could be used to evacuate Russian nationals.

Syrian government forces, meanwhile, pounded rebel strongholds in the central city of Homs and Damascus.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 94 people were killed across the country on Monday, including 63 civilians, three army deserters and 28 government troops.

Government troops stepped up a siege of Tasas in the southern province of Daraa, cradle of the anti-regime revolt, said the rebel Free Syrian Army.

The army broke into the south of Tasas and launched raids, said FSA spokesman Louay Rashdan.

One blast at Mohassan in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor killed seven people, including two rebel commanders, the Syrian Observatory said.

Clashes and shelling persisted in several areas of Damascus province, including the towns of Douma and Qudsaya which have been under bombardment for the past five days.

An activist who identified himself as Mahmoud Doumani told AFP there was widespread destruction in Douma.

"Regime forces have destroyed homes, farms and many mosques over the past week. But in the past couple of days, in the absence of the UN monitors, attacks on Douma have become even worse than before," Doumani said, adding that families who have not fled the town are in hiding.

The 300 unarmed monitors in the UN observer mission suspended operations on Saturday because of the heightened violence.

The mission's leader Major General Robert Mood has urged the government and opposition to let "women, children, the elderly and the injured to leave conflict zones". But so far there has been no letup.

Mood is to brief the Security Council on Tuesday amid growing doubts among western nations that the observers will be allowed to stay in the country.

"I think there will be a lot of member states of the council, including us, who will be questioning now what the future is for the mission and, therefore, by extension the Annan plan," said Britain's UN ambassador Mark Lyall Grant.

UN rights chief Navi Pillay demanded a halt to the government bombardment of populated areas. "Such actions amount to crimes against humanity and possible war crimes," Pillay told the UN Human Rights Council.

The annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting brings a wealth of scientific minds to the shores of Germany?s Lake Constance. Every summer at Lindau, dozens of Nobel Prize winners exchange ideas with hundreds of young researchers from around the world. Whereas the Nobelists are the marquee names, the younger contingent is an accomplished group in its own right. In advance of this year?s meeting, which focuses on physics, we are profiling several promising attendees under the age of 30. The profile below is the 12th in a series of 30.

Name: Andre Wilmes
Age: 23
Born: Luxembourg
Nationality: Luxembourg

Current position: Research assistant and Ph.D. student, Imperial College London, Department of Aeronautics
Education: Master in aeronautical engineering, Imperial College London

What is your field of research?
My research focuses on developing multiscale- and multiphysics-compatible modeling methods for simulating the structural response and fracture behavior of graphene-based compounds and devices. Currently a reformulated Molecular Dynamics Finite Element Method (MDFEM) is used to investigate the potential and the design which a new class of graphene-based composite materials would possess (as opposed to carbon fiber?based composite materials).

What drew you to physics, and to that research area in particular?
From an early age, I have been fascinated by science and mathematics. While I truly enjoy the pure sciences and the formalisms of elegant mathematics, I consider the ultimate challenge to lie in the efficient application of new science in ingenious implementations.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A position in an advanced research and development lab, be it academic, governmental or industry-based, would be a dream position. Demonstrating, for instance, proof of concept designs employing state-of-the-art science progress would constitute a thrilling and rewarding task. My personal interest is in furthering numerical modeling methods to a level where these are able to work in parallel with, if not ahead of, experimental work. Hence proof-of-concept designs could be better optimized prior to synthesis or manufacture, leading to considerable time and cost reductions.

Who are your scientific heroes?
I do not have a particular scientific hero. In general I carry great admiration for any researcher who has made a long-lasting imprint on a wide breath of disciplines. For instance, I admire many mathematicians and physicists such as the likes of Euler, Poincar?, Maxwell or Schr?dinger. Although due to my research interest, one of my favorite current researchers is Sir Konstantin Novoselov.

If you had unlimited resources, what kind of research would you conduct?
Given unlimited resources, several research areas come to mind, of which energy production, transmission and storage seem most crucial. Firstly, I would support all of the current efforts to further accelerate the development of commercially available fusion power. Secondly, research towards a new generation of significantly more efficient, compact batteries would attract my attention.

What activities outside of physics do you most enjoy?
I am a passionate horse rider, having competed across Europe for over 10 years in show-jumping, dressage and mostly my favorite discipline: eventing. I came to play a bit of polo at the Imperial College Riding and Polo Club, which I chaired for two years. In 2008 I came second in the U.K. student riding dressage championships (BUCS). Albeit recently having retired my own eventing horse, I will represent Luxembourg once more in the upcoming 2012 World University Equestrian Championships in Aachen, Germany.

What do you hope to gain from this year?s Lindau meeting?
I consider three invaluable opportunities that the Lindau meetings offer for any young, passionate researcher. First and foremost is the chance to interact with Nobel Prize laureates, which is inherently exciting, rewarding and stimulating for anyone involved in research. Secondly, the meetings connect like-minded young people from a variety of backgrounds, which may lead to synergies for future collaborative research. Thirdly, from the possibility to interact with the attendees and listen to the Nobel laureates? scientific presentations, I inevitably expect new ideas to arise for my own work.

Are there any Nobelists whom you are particularly excited to meet or learn from at Lindau?
Two Nobelists caught my special attention. Firstly, I am interested in meeting Prof. Dr. Walter Kohn, whose work is fundamental to density functional theory. The latter is potentially a future direction of my work. Equivalently, I am looking forward to meeting Prof. Dr. Sir Harold Kroto, because fullerenes and fullerene-derived compounds constitute a fundamental building block of my current work.

Full Metal Panic: Evening's Glow needs characters!

So are you a fan of Full Metal Panic!?

If the answer to that question is yes then this RP will be worth your while to check out.

As a fan myself, I know better than to exactly copy the original content of the series and I know not to touch the mechanics of what made it what it is for fans like me. While I will follow the basic premise of the manga and a bit of the anime, this is a completely different story line than what is depicted in the manga and involves a whole new set of characters and machines called Arm Slaves!

So what exactly are you in for should you choose to join the RP?

The option to own and pilot an Arm Slave is the driving force of this RP. Your character is a member of a new unit within Mithril's SRT (Special Response Team) known as Gaea Team. Led by the veteran pilot, Shirata Kurosaka, and seconded by American Arm Slave Specialist, Alyssa Herman, Gaea team is among the new vanguard force which Mithril must throw into the fire against the likes of terrorist organizations such as Amalgam.

Along the way, you'll have to adjust to an ever changing environment as Gaea Team must deal with both internal and external conflicts, betrayals, intrigue, and the ever increasing presence of enemies in possession of a special unit of equipment known as the Lambda Driver...

So what is the Lambda Driver?

The Lambda Driver, simply put, is a device which can transform the user's mental images into actual physical power.

Such technology should not exist, but thanks to special human beings known as the Whispered, they do. The Lambda Driver is capable of defying, and even outright breaking, the laws of physics. The example photo above illustrates the Arbalest, piloted by Sosuke Sagara, protecting itself from an incoming round fired from a tank. The field of protection generated by the Arbalest is clearly visible in blue as the round fired by the tank flashes purple before disintegrating into nothingness.

So, do you think you have what it takes to master your Arm Slave, find a way to combat enemies who can defy the laws of physics, and manage to stay alive long enough to see your hard work come to fruition?

If the answer to the above question is "Yes", then please consider joining the RP. I can guarantee it will not be a waste of your time and it will prove to be an enjoyable and challenging experience.

This RP has a strict storyline to it which will not be deviated from, and it carries with it a series of predetermined events along with others that will be made up as we go along for maximum flexibility and fluidity. Though we will be adhering to the plot and settings I have planned, we will not be limited in how we go about accomplishing our goals.

Everyone's characters will be just as important as the next. All input given by said characters is taken into account and the final decision on how we go about our missions is calculated from the data acquired. If you have questions or concerns, voice them and they will be heard.

If you're interested, then click the link at the top of the page!

I'll see you inside!

Your PC?s CPU isn?t compatible with Windows 8 ? Error Explained

Some people who are trying to install Windows 8 Release Preview are reporting an error. This error has been reported even by those who could run Windows 8 Consumer Preview on the same machine. While installing Windows 8 Release Preview , you may see the following error message:

This PC can?t run Windows 8

Your PC?s CPU isn?t compatible with Windows 8

PCNotsupprtWin8z Your PCs CPU isnt compatible with Windows 8 Error Explained

So what has changed since the Consumer Preview? Let us check what this error is and what Microsoft is saying about it.

As we can see, this error is related to CPU requirements for Windows 8 Release Preview. So to install Windows 8 RP, your CPU (processor) must support these features ? PAE/NX/SSE2 .

Let us see what these means.

?No-eXecute (NX) is a processor feature that allows marking of memory pages as non-executable. The feature allows the CPU to help guard the system from attacks by malicious software. When the NX feature is enabled on a system, it prevents malicious software code from being placed in accessible regions of memory to be executed when control reaches that memory location. Windows 8 requires that systems must have processors that support NX, and NX must be turned on?

?Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2) is a previous standard that is supported in Intel and AMD processors. All processors that support NX also support SSE2.?

?To use the NX processor feature, the processor must be running in Physical Address Extension (PAE) mode. PAE is a processor feature that enables x86 processors to access more than 4 GB of physical memory on capable versions of Windows. ?

The processor requirement won?t impact customers on modern systems, or on systems that meet logo requirements for Windows 7 because these systems have PAE-capable 32-bit processors that support NX and allow NX to be turned on. Only a small set of customers who have Windows 7 running on very old 32-bit processors without PAE/NX support will be impacted.

Check if your system? Supports NX or SSE2

To check this, there?s a Windows Sysinternals tool Coreinfo , a command-line utility. You can get it from here. Running this from the command line, will provide the required info -

coreinfoCPU Your PCs CPU isnt compatible with Windows 8 Error Explained

A supported processor feature will have the * character displayed next to the feature name, and a - character if not supported.

?If PAE is displayed as not supported in Coreinfo output, your system has a processor that is not PAE-capable, and cannot support NX. If PAE is shown as supported, but NX is displayed as not supported in Coreinfo output:

? Consult the feature set published by the CPU manufacturer to determine if NX is supported by the processor on your system.

? If the processor on your system does have the NX support, then your system may have misconfigured BIOS setting for NX support option.

If NX is supported on your system, can be turned on from BIOS settings if its not turned On.?

So check the BIOS and enable NX (?No eXecute bit?) or the equivalent XD (?eXecute Disabled?) feature?in the BIOS?settings. Look them in Advanced or Security options in BIOS. They may be referred by various names according to BIOS manf. They can be named No Execute Memory Protect, Execute Disabled Memory Protection,?EDB (Execute Disabled Bit) , EVP (Enhanced Virus Protection) or by some oth name. So check for these.

If the BIOS doesnt show any of these option?for?NX , then check with BIOS manf for any BIOS updates which might have added this. Very old processors may not include this feature.

Error 0?0000260

A related error is?also seen in when trying to install Windows 8 in a VM with an error 0?0000260.

?If the Virtual Machine (VM) is hosted on a system that supports NX, you must enable PAE/NX in the virtualization product?s settings or configuration manager when setting up the Windows 8 virtual environment. ?

For more detailed info on PAE/NX/SSE2 requirement for Windows 8, Microsoft has published a Whitepaper -? PAE/NX/SSE2 Support Requirement Guide for Windows 8

This document details the processor support for the PAE/NX/SSE2 requirement in Windows 8, error cases and scenarios that customers encounter when machines fail to meet the requirement, and what to do to install Windows 8 on their PCs. The information provided in the document applies to Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012.

Microsoft?s Bill Fill explained in detail about this error in The Answers Forum. He starts with apology for the inconvenience caused by this issue and thanks the users?for trying out the Release Preview. Further he says that Microsoft may contact a few of those who reported this issue?if?further info is needed as it may be a bug and has to be corrected before RTM.

Then he describes what exactly has changed since CP as users who could run the CP on their machine encountered this issue while installing RP on the same machine.

What has changed in Windows 8 RP, since CP

We did make changes in the upgrade detection logic since the CP. The changes revolve around the default installer and how it checks for precise CPU features before continuing. Windows 8 requires the NX capabilities of modern CPUs. This is done for security reasons to ensure that malware defense features work reliably. This is important as we want to ensure that people can feel safe using lots of different software including desktop apps and apps from the Windows Store. This means some very old CPUs will not work with Windows 8. In the CP we did not block the installer for the NX feature. Based on CP telemetry we felt adding the block to setup was warranted to respect people?s time. It is better to get it over with quickly, even if it is disappointing. We also used the telemetry to get some handle on how many CPUs would fail the NX requirement so we could be sure enforcing NX presence was responsible in the ecosystem. We learned that less than 1% of CPUs did not have NX capability available and configured correctly and out of those 0.1% did not have the NX capability at all. Based on this we feel that enforcing NX presence is a good thing to do since it results in better malware defenses. Thus we now enforce NX presence in the kernel boot sequence.

We didn?t make any change related to PAE detection, but it is good to note that PAE is a pre-requisite for NX on 32 bit processors due to how NX is implemented in memory manager page tables.

We did change SSE2 instruction set detection based on telemetry from the CP and Windows 7.

The result for users at large is their PC is more reliable. We do not check for SSE2 in the kernel boot sequence,;however, if your CPU has NX it also almost certainly has SSE2.

Workaround

Before trying this workaround, please check & configure NX in BIOS. The the workaround?uses the ISO to install.

?Download the ISO and burn it to a DVD or create a bootable USB flash drive. Boot from the media that you created. If your CPU does not support NX you will see a code 5D bluescreen before setup starts. This is rare, but if it happens we won?t be able to help you run Windows 8.

This workaround may succeed because Windows contains two installers: the end user installer (setup.exe at the root of the Windows DVD) and the commercial installer (setup.exe found in the \sources directory of the Windows DVD). The commercial installer runs when the PC is booted from DVD/USB media and does not perform the NX/SSE2 checks and attempts to enable NX/SSE2 on supported systems.?

This issue has been explained in detail by Microsoft. If someone getting this error, he or she can refer this and try the workaround.

Lack of Vitamin D to Blame for Black Cancer Deaths? - Healthy You ...

This arti?cle orig?i?nally appeared on?MSNBC

African-Americans are 25 per?cent more likely to die from can?cer than white Amer?i?cans are, and the rea?sons are numer?ous, includ?ing lower socio-economic sta?tus, poorer access to health care, and the can?cer diag?no?sis com?ing at later, more deadly stages.

Still, health experts say these fac?tors can?not fully explain the extent of dis?par?i?ties in sur?vival for?the most com?mon can?cers, such as breast, lung, colon and prostate cancers.

A paper pub?lished in the cur?rent issue of the jour?nal Dermato-Endocrinology points the fin?ger at a seem?ingly obvi?ous but over?looked cul?prit: the?sun.

The researchers? the?ory is that, in north?ern lat?i?tudes, the dark skin of African-Americans can?not absorb enough sun?light to gen?er?ate ade?quate amounts of vit?a?min D, which is often called the ?sun?shine vit?a?min.? The body uses ultra?vi?o?let rays from the sun to man?u?fac?ture vit?a?min D in the inner lay?ers of the?skin.

Vit?a?min D is needed for strong bones; doc?tors nearly 100 years ago asso?ci?ated a lack of ade?quate sun expo?sure with?rick?ets?among child labor?ers, exem?pli?fied by bowed legs. Recent stud?ies also have shown that low lev?els of vit?a?min D in the blood seem to con?tribute to a weak immune sys?tem and a host of dis?eases, such as can?cer and mul?ti?ple scle?ro?sis. [?Info?graphic: The Power of Vit?a?min D?]

This lack of vit?a?min D could com?pletely fill in the health dis?par?ity gap for can?cer sur?vival between white and black Amer?i?cans, the researchers said.

Pre?vi?ous work by geneti?cist Rick Kit?tles at the Uni?ver?sity of Chicago sug?gests that upwards of 75 per?cent of African-Americans are?defi?cient in vit?a?min D. Kit?tles says that African-Americans liv?ing north of the 37th par?al?lel ? just about any?place north of cen?tral Cal?i?for?nia, Texas, Ten?nessee or North Car?olina ? will have dif?fi?culty through most of the year absorb?ing enough sun?light to make vit?a?min D, because of the low angle of the rays reach?ing the Earth?s surface.

Given this largely estab?lished fact, researchers Alan Peiris of East Ten?nessee State Uni?ver?sity and William Grant of the Sun?light, Nutri?tion and Health Research Cen?ter in San Fran?cisco set out to look for a cor?re?la?tion between vit?a?min D and can?cer death dis?par?i?ties. (In past research, Grant and a col?league sug?gested low lev?els of ultraviolet-B rays in Aus?tria, paired with Mozart?s noc?tur?nal habits, may have led to?vit?a?min D defi?ciency in the com?poser, who died at the age of?35.)

What they found in the new study is pre?lim?i?nary but war?rants fur?ther inves?ti?ga?tion, they said. Rely?ing solely on a sci?en?tific lit?er?a?ture review, the researchers found that low vit?a?min D is inde?pen?dently asso?ci?ated with each of the can?cer types for which an unex?plained health dis?par?ity exists between African-Americans and white Americans.

Specif?i?cally, they found lin?ger?ing dis?par?i?ties for 13 types of can?cer after account?ing for socioe?co?nomic sta?tus, stage at diag?no?sis, and treat?ment: blad?der, breast, colon, endome?trial, lung, ovar?ian, pan?cre?atic, prostate, rec?tal, tes?tic?u?lar, and vagi?nal can?cer; Hodgkin?s lym?phoma; and melanoma. For each one, there is a vitamin-D connection.

Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva at UFC 147: Will you tune in? (VIDEO)

OK, so it's not the main event Brazil was hoping for when the UFC announced a June event, since they thought they were going to see Chael Sonnen's rematch with Anderson Silva. After Vitor Belfort's injury forced him to pull out of the event, it's not even the runner-up to the event Brazil wanted. But looking at Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva in a vacuum, is it a bout you're excited about?

It's a rematch of their close, 2009 bout that ended in a unanimous decision for Franklin. Since then, Franklin is 1-2, with a win over Chuck Liddell and losses to Forrest Griffin and Vitor Belfort, while Silva is 2-1 with wins over Cung Le and Michael Bisping and a loss to Chris Leben. Is this bout at the top of the card enough to make you want to pay for UFC 147? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.
