I currently?follow 159 users on Twitter?and I occasionally get overwhelmed by how much they tweet. It's intimidating to imagine that these tweets amount to only a tiny fraction of the 400 million or so tweets generated each day.

Forbes' Tomio Geron reports that Twitter CEO Dick Costolo mentioned the social media network's latest statistics during a talk at a conference organized by the Economist.

Costolo?explained that Twitter now has over 140 million active users ??individuals who log in at least once a month ??and over 400 million new tweets per day.

This is quite a jump from statistics reported in?April, when social media data company Dataminr?suggested that Twitter is seeing 340 million new tweets each day.

The sheer size of the numbers revealed by Costolo aside, it's interesting to consider that Lady Gaga?? who is currently the most followed user on the service ? has over 25 million followers right now. If we round some numbers here and there, that means that one out of every six active Twitter users is following Lady Gaga.

Fifteenth-century art strives for divine harmony

Enigmatic paintings on the Renaissance theme of the ideal city are currently on view in Urbino, Italy, at the historic Palazzo Ducale, itself a splendid masterwork of 15th-century Italian architecture.

According to Lorenza Mochi Onori, director general of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture of the Marche Region, Italy, the Urbino Renaissance revolved around the figure of Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino. Commander and soldier of fortune, Federico was an expert in the construction of objects and machines.

Duke Federico?s education combined with intellectual curiosity and the meeting in his court with figures such as the polymath Leon Battista Alberti and the painter Piero della Francesca??all of the theoretical perspective,? as Mochi Onori put it?led to a mathematical Renaissance in Urbino during the second half of the 15th century.

Emblematic of this historical period are three depictions of ideal cities, tempera paintings preserved in Urbino; Baltimore, Md.; and Berlin, Germany. The artists of all three paintings are unknown, so the paintings are referred to by the locations of their current owners: Urbino, Baltimore, and Berlin.

While medieval cities were constructed as images of power, domination, and control of the society, the central theme of the Renaissance city is ideal proportion.

The sense of harmony is felt immediately.

?The sense of harmony is felt immediately,? said Mochi Onori, who curated in collaboration with Vittoria Garibaldi the exhibit The Ideal City, subtitled Renaissance utopia in Urbino between the time of Piero della Francesca and Raphael.

The harmony of the ideal city is linked to the vision of the mathematician and Franciscan friar Luca Pacioli, who worked together with Leonardo da Vinci. According to Pacioli, reality, given by divine creation, is governed by mathematical relationships and numerical proportions, with which man reproduces the space.

Using the five regular polyhedra mentioned by Plato, it is possible to ?create relationships between spaces, and on the basis of these proportions, one can construct reality in such a way as to reflect this divine harmony,? Mochi Onori said.

The paintings of the ideal cities are not pictorial but mathematical and as such represent an ideal world. By using perspective, thought translates into a construction of reality, and all that the artist conceives is created based on mathematical rules.

?The reality is not made of lines and mathematical constructions, but of atmospheric density, light, and shade, by which the painting is broken in the light and is totally created from light, shadow, and atmospheric density,? Mochi Onori said, referring to different schools of thought.

Even from the viewpoint of colors, we see an ideal representation. The images, in fact, are always clear because the air does not exist. ?There is only the mathematical construction, perspective; and the color of the air is not considered,? Mochi Onori said. So the light is always uniform.

There are very few notations of life; from small pots in the windows in the works of Urbino to the figures in the works from Baltimore it seems life was ?added afterward to this mathematical space,? she said. This crystalline reality is not corrupted by life, but is the center of human space in order to measure man?a concept taken from the classics.

During this time in history, the harmony of the ideal city reflected the utopical conception of an enlightened government that respects its citizens? freedom and, therefore, is able to manage a peaceful and harmonious society.

To illustrate this link between the image of the ideal city and the social order, Mochi Onori gave the example of the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino, the ducal palace and residence of Federico da Montefeltro: ?From the architectural point of view, the palace opens onto the city in a direct relationship to emphasize the balance of social relations between power and enlightened society.?

In addition, the relationship between duke and architect became almost one of equals, Mochi Onori said, referring to the architect Leon Battista Alberti, a friend of Duke Federico. The duke did not order the architect to build a city based on size and image; rather they had a relationship of mutual intellectual exchange. And for his architect Luciano Laurana, the duke issued an engineer?s license.

We do not know the purpose or the author of these ideal cities. According to Mochi Onori, the images probably served to decorate furniture, as they were found on chests, headboards, and the backs of benches.

Some speculate the images may have been used for meditation. The contemplation of mathematical reality and order inherent in these representations may induce a state of abstraction from reality and introspection that brings the observer to the beauty of what Luca Pacioli called the ?divine proportion.?

Regarding attribution, according to Mochi Onori?s experience with reflectography, an infrared technique used by art historians, the works from Urbino and Baltimore may suggest the same author, a possibility that further fuels the sense of mystery associated with these depictions.

The theme of the ideal city has been present throughout history up to modern drawing-table designs and symbols of political power such as Chandigarh in India or Brasilia. In the Renaissance, however, the design did not aim at building ?neighborhoods or cities rationally invented on paper,? as Mochi Onori described, but considered the city as an environment on a human scale.

The paintings of the ideal cities are model representations of reality and a perfect synthesis between the classical art and the rigor of science?unique and unrepeatable as in the case of the mathematical Renaissance of Urbino.

Next to the paintings of the ideal cities from Urbino and Baltimore, the exhibit presents some 50 other paintings, sculptures, inlays, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, and architectural treatises by authors such as Jacopo de Barbari, Mantegna, Bramante, and Raphael. The exhibit is open through July 8.

Judge Says Pension Fund Can't Seek Bankruptcy Protection ? NPR ...

The Northern Mariana Islands: white sand, blue water, and huge pension liabilities.

Earlier this year, the pension plan of a U.S. territory in the Pacific Ocean became the first pubic U.S. pension fund to file for bankruptcy. The fund ? for the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands ? had been in financial trouble for years, largely because the government of the islands hadn?t kept up with the payments it was required to make into the fund.

The legal case hinged on a single important question: Is a pension fund separate from the government or part of it? Under U.S bankruptcy law, commonwealths and states themselves cannot file for bankruptcy.

The CNMI may be small, but this case has ramifications for much larger pension funds all across the U.S. that are facing shortfalls.

As law professor David Skeel told us recently, this case could set a key precedent for other funds.

?

?Folks who do not want pension funds to be able to file for bankruptcy or to restructure are probably watching with terror, ? said Skeel. ?Folks who think there is no alternative but to figure out a way to restructure the pension I think are watching to see if this is another avenue.?

Right now, it looks like this other avenue is blocked. A U.S. bankruptcy judge in Hawaii has issued a tentative ruling to dismiss the case.

The judge wrote that the Northern Mariana Islands Retirement Fund is ?a ?governmental unit?? and therefore ?not eligible for relief under chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code.?

But what he said after that is intriguing. He took time in his ruling to defend the trustees of the Fund for pursuing this route:

The trustees of the Fund should be praised, not criticized, for commencing this case. The trustees find themselves in an intolerable position. The Fund for which they are responsible is caught between an irresistible force ? obligations to retirees which it cannot pay ? and an immovable object ? the government, which has persistently failed to pay its debt to the Fund. The trustees? attempt to find a solution to this dilemma is creative and praiseworthy even though I am inclined to rule that it cannot succeed. Congress did not intend that the Bankruptcy Code could solve all problems, least of all the financial problems of governmental units.

The attorney for the fund, Brad Huesman, told the local paper, the Saipan Tribune, that the fund hasn?t decided whether or not it will appeal the ruling. He says the pension fund is weighing its options.

One option that is reportedly being discussed is dissolving the fund and having the CNMI Department of Finance take over responsibility for paying out the benefits. The Fund?s administrator, Richard S. Villagomez, hates that idea.

?Having the Fund?s assets under the control of the entity that owes it the most money and is responsible for remitting contributions is analogous to the ?fox guarding the henhouse,? ? Villagomez told the Marianas Variety.

This new option ? the government of the CNMI taking over the fund ? could foreshadow what may happen to other struggling pension funds here in the continental U.S.

Dick Ingram, executive director of the Illinois Teachers Retirement System, recently told us if his pension fund ran out of money, it would just become part of the state. That?s similar to what?s being proposed in the CNMI.

?The state law says the state has to pay the benefits if we can?t, so at that point we become just an administrator and send them the payroll and they pay it, ? said Ingram.

Hello. I would like to reserve a spot in your RP, but before I make a character would you mind explaining the plot a bit more to me? I understand the history, it's the present that has me a bit muddled.

I also have some questions for you if you don't mind my pestering:
What kind of characters are you looking for? When under the shards' influence does the victim keep their persona, do they become slightly warped, or do they become mindless beings? What sort of symbiotic relationship occurs when the shard implants on a person? Are they granted certain abilites? Does anything change physically? Can you explain the Guild a bit more? In the skelly, how are you ranking threat levels?

Hope I'm not bothering you too much, just like as much detail as I can before joining anything. Thanks for your time.

In truth, it's a port from a site to this one, to run an alternate universe or alternate plot the one currently in play with others. I wanted to see really how the boards were created on this site, and how all of the RPs worked, but there's so many people to so few actually good stories and writers alike.

For the sake of not explaining everything, let's say that the simple present plot is character development and calling. The shard is more like a symbiote that is parasitic in nature, inside of you and controlling your every action -- should it so choose (you so choose).

It can warp your mind if you allow it. It can break an already broken mind. It can strength and bolster something that is already confident, making you feel invincible. Imagine it's a super-drug of the mind, based around something that's living inside you -- to give you the potential to grow stronger with each use.

There's a lot more shown and explained on our site, but the gist of it is growth and development. There's an evil on the horizon, but what is it? Is it you? Me? Something else? Subjecting yourself might be the only way to defeat it -- or the only way to give in. How will we know? ;)

-- As I said before, persona is whatever you decide to develop. I never tell anyone how to play who they are or what they want to play. The relationship you build can be horrible for the host or good, all depending on how you write it.

-- The ability of Psionics.

Does anything change physically?
-- No.

Can you explain the Guild a bit more?
-- Preferably not, lol. The Guild is simply another name for God, the gods, a higher power, The Raven's Brand, etc...

In the skelly, how are you ranking threat levels?
-- I don't think I'm going to port the Stats over to this RP, so we'll play it slow.

Frankly, I didn't think anyone would find interest in this or PM me. I just wanted to test the boards out and do a little writing, lol. The concept is original and about 8 years old now, the Zenith, that is.
