XBMC shown running on Ouya game console

ouya

By now, I?m sure all of you are familiar with Ouya and that fact that it will begin shipping later this month. Ouya is a console designed specifically for playing Android games, so logically, it makes sense that it could potentially run other Android applications as well. In fact, the developers of XMBC actually announced last year that it would be able to run Ouya, making the possible uses for the device much more numerous.

XBMC developer Nathan Betzen was able to test the application on a pre-release version of Ouya and uploaded a video to his YouTube channel. Keep in mind that the controller is not the final design, but it?s safe to assume that the console is most likely the version customers will be receiving.

In the video, XBMC is running at about 54fps, which will be pretty close to full speed. As you can see, basic UI transitions and even 1080p video perform almost flawlessly. At the moment, it appears that not all formats are running as smoothly, unfortunately. The support for various codecs comes from libstagefright, which is not completely stable. As a result, early users should stick to standard and popular formats.

For those who forgot, Ouya has an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. If you didn?t order one during the Kickstarter campaign, then you can order one now, which would ship out in June.

Does It Matter What Kind of Toothpaste I Buy?

Does It Matter What Kind of Toothpaste I Buy?Dear Lifehacker,
When I go to the drug store, I find an entire wall of toothpaste. Some whiten, others work better for sensitive teeth, ingredients vary, and there are so many brands. Do toothpaste "features" actually work as advertised? Does it actually matter what I buy?

Sincerely,
Toothpaste Ache

Dear T.A.,
Yes, it actually does matter what kind of toothpaste you buy. Choosing a brand and a type, however, shouldn't require too much forethought. Most of the time, toothpaste "features" don't matter and you're better off just buying an ordinary tube. That's the simple answer that should work for most people, but let's get into the details.

Toothpaste "Features" Rarely Matter (and You May Want to Avoid Them)

Does It Matter What Kind of Toothpaste I Buy?It should come as no surprise that toothpaste companies add features to try and encourage purchases, but often enough you'll find these fancier tubes lacking the benefits you paid for. In some cases, however, features are relevant.

We spoke with Dr. Martin Hogan to get an idea of what several additives provide and if they're actually helpful:

Toothpastes that advertise for whitening often contain abrasives or other additives that work to remove surface stain from the enamel layer of a tooth; excessive use of these toothpastes can sometimes cause sensitivity due to wearing down the enamel layer. In sensitivity toothpaste, potassium nitrate is the main ingredient in sensitivity toothpaste and works to calm the nerve of the tooth. "Anti-cavity" or fluoride toothpaste can contain levels of fluoride in their paste that is higher than a normal toothpaste; there are also prescriptions you can get from your dentist for toothpaste that contains even higher amounts of fluoride than you can get over the counter to help prevent or fight cavities.

Of course, you should consult your dentist before purchasing toothpastes with additives. You may not need the extra cavity protection and could end up spending too much (although a little fluoride certainly won't cause problems for most people). Some people (myself included) end up buying whitening toothpaste that causes sensitivity problems, then start paying more for sensitivity toothpaste instead. In general, your teeth should be white enough if you just brush them properly and avoid vices like coffee, cigarettes, sodas, and sour candies. In fact, if you just avoid sipping and drink water you can limit the harm to your teeth caused by sugary drinks and coffee. In some cases you may need a fancy toothpaste, but most people can stick with the regular stuff if they follow good dental care guidelines.

Ensure Your Toothpaste Bears the ADA's Seal of Approval

Does It Matter What Kind of Toothpaste I Buy?A standard toothpaste with few abrasives will serve you well. While many recognizable brands pass the test, you can save a little money by going with a smaller brand that works just as well. As Dr. Joseph Banker explains, you just need to locate the American Dental Association's (ADA) Seal of Acceptance:

Any brand that has the ADA Seal of Acceptance has passed rigorous testing to ensure a quality, effective product. Generics are not likely to carry the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Consistent quality and manufacturing standards may not be guaranteed.

That said, Dr. Banker reminds us that proper brushing technique is paramount above all else:

While the choice of an ADA accepted toothpaste is important, brushing technique is crucial. I would rather see someone brush quickly using good technique rather than spend more time brushing incorrectly.

While most of us think we know proper brushing technique, it never hurts to have a refresher. The ADA offers tips and a video for both brushing and flossing your teeth for optimal dental health. Check them out if you want to learn what's a bit more important than your toothpaste selection.

Love,
Lifehacker

CHICAGO (AP) ? They live underwater, eat bloodworms, and are promoted on pet websites. But African dwarf frogs can carry salmonella.

An outbreak tied to the frogs sickened nearly 400 people, mostly children, from 2008 to 2011.

Since these miniature amphibians can live up to 18 years, some linked to the outbreak may remain in U.S. home aquariums. That's according to government researchers in a Monday report from the journal Pediatrics.

Five outbreak-linked cases also occurred last year. No one died.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises washing hands after touching the frogs' aquarium water and says young children should not clean aquariums.

The California breeder linked to the outbreak briefly suspended distribution and cooperated with authorities.

(AP) ? The Illinois Republican Party's central committee backed off an attempt to fire party chairman Pat Brady on Saturday, amid concern that ousting him because of his support for gay marriage could damage GOP efforts to appeal to more moderate voters.

Brady became a target of some socially conservative members of the party when he spoke out in favor of a bill before the Legislature earlier this year that would end Illinois' ban on same-sex marriage.

Committeemen had scheduled a Saturday meeting in the Chicago suburb of Tinley Park to consider firing him, but it was canceled late Friday, partly because it became clear there weren't enough votes to remove Brady.

State Sen. Dave Syverson, a committeeman and party treasurer, said the vote would have been close, but members who had concerns about Brady separate from his gay marriage stance "didn't want to be thrown in with those" concerned about it.

"Instead of making a rash decision, we wanted to sit down and say, 'What are our goals and are we reaching them?' Sometimes holding off and giving time to make a rational decision actually works," Syverson, R-Rockford, said.

The conflict recently has spread past the state's boundaries, and prominent Republicans, including U.S. Mark Kirk and state House Republican Leader Tom Cross, warned that firing Brady would be "a mistake." They say if the party is going to grow, it needs to be more inclusive and accepting of differences of opinion ? particularly in the Democratic-leaning state of Illinois.

A spokesman for Kirk, the state's ranking Republican lawmaker, said Saturday the senator was pleased the committee "made the right decision." Kirk voted to end the policy barring gays from openly serving in the military, known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," and he opposes a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

"(Kirk) believes it's time to move on and focus on getting Republicans elected in 2014," spokesman Lance Trover said.

Brady, who also had the support of former Illinois GOP governors Jim Edgar and Jim Thompson, declined to comment.

The Republican Party is trying to regroup after a poor showing at the polls in November, with national leaders vowing to work harder to attract more young, moderate and minority voters who may agree with the party's stance on fiscal matters but who disagree with its views on social issues, such as immigration and gay rights.

Last month, more than 75 prominent Republicans, including seven former governors and advisers to former President George W. Bush, signed a legal brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down California's ban on same-sex marriage. Former First Lady Laura Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney also support gay marriage.

But politicians who vote or take public positions that counter more conservative members of their party often face consequences, including primary challenges and defeats.

State Sen. Jason Barickman was the lone Republican to vote for the gay marriage bill when the Illinois Senate passed it last month. The House hasn't voted on it yet. Barickman faced criticism from county GOP officials back home, and was the target of automated phone calls to his constituents by an organization that opposes gay marriage.

State Sen. Jim Oberweis, one of the committeemen leading the effort to remove Brady, said it was "certainly a possibility" that the issue could come up again at the party's meeting in April in Chicago. Oberweis, of Sugar Grove, said members delayed the meeting because they wanted more time and wanted to be sure Brady, who is out of town, could attend.

"Some of the members thought it would be better to take a little more time and make sure Pat could be back," Oberweis said. "... I think we're all interested in figuring out how to help revive the Republican Party in Illinois."

Oberweis said gay marriage isn't the only reason he wants Brady gone; he also blames Brady for the party's poor November election results and for working against some Republicans in primary elections.

"I believe that the Republican Party identity has to be on financial sanity, solving some of our fiscal mess," said Oberweis, a dairy magnate. "This other stuff is a diversion from that."
